Elephants Nest, Horndon, Devon, PL19 9NQ – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Isolated old inn surrounded by Dartmoor walks, some interesting original features, real ales and good food; comfortable bedrooms
With well appointed and attractively furnished bedrooms, this cosy old inn is an especially enjoyable place to stay – and the breakfasts are very highly thought-of. The main bar has lots of beer pump clips on the beams, high bar chairs by the bar counter, Dartmoor Jail Ale, Palmers Best, Sharps Doom Bar and a guest beer such as Otter Bright on handpump, a couple of farm ciders and several wines by the glass. There are two other rooms with nice modern dark wood dining chairs around a mix of tables and throughout there are bare stone walls, flagstones and three woodburning stoves. The spreading, attractive garden has plenty of picnic-sets under parasols and from here you look over dry-stone walls to the pastures of Dartmoor's lower slopes and the rougher moorland above where there are plenty of walks.

Good Pub Guide Food

Using local produce, the reliably good bar food includes lunchtime filled baguettes (not Sundays), ham hock terrine with wasabi mayonnaise, caramelised shallot and goats cheese tarte tatin, popular home-made burger with red onion marmalade, steak and kidney pudding, chicken breast stuffed with taleggio and rosemary, and whole lemon sole with prawns, capers and lemon butter.

Nice Pub/Restaurant. Food seems good but over priced. Only one BIG problem the Landlord who is extremely Rude and Arrogant, who definitely needs to attend a course on Customer Service. We visited with the intention of provisionally booking a Birthday Dinner for 15 people, but soon changed our minds after only one drink. There are plenty of nice friendly places nearby so will be going there instead.
Will never return as long as he is there.

We really enjoyed our stay here (Nov 10). Our room was high hotel standard. The pub itself is atmospheric and the food and service excellent. A lovely spot.

We visited the Elephant's nest as an unbooked table of 4 on Friday 18 June after having been to the very pretty and popular Lydford Gorge nearby. We ordered drinks at the bar first which were extortionately priced (£3.50 for a pint of ale), and when we asked the bar lady where one of the ales was from she didn't know and didn't offer to find out for us. We then ordered 4 main meals from the lunchtime menu. My mum and I both ordered the shallot and goat's cheese tarte tatin (£9.95) which was very tasty but just came with the tiniest salad and a token smudge of balsamic. Very overpriced for a lunchtime meal and I would have liked a larger and more thoughtful salad or some nice Devon new pots with it rather than the tiny salad which it came with - it was more like a starter than main meal. Other meals were along the same lines; well cooked but very overpriced for what you got on the plate - not very good value at all. My husband had the lamb curry which had lots of 'woody' aromatics in it, one of which was unidentifiable - and when we asked what it was (out of interest) the landlord's wife dismissingly said 'probably cardamom' without taking the time to actually look at it for us. We have since identified it as Black Cardamom which is very different to the usual green. After our food was delivered we asked the young girl if we could order some more drinks, only to be told to 'get them at the bar'! There was only us and two other tables in the pub, (plus the landlord and landlady who were drinking at the bar) so they were hardly busy and we felt the waitress could have got our drinks for us. Nice pub inside, traditional, well kept plants and hanging baskets outside, but given the surliness of all the staff and owners, plus the high food and drink prices I can understand why this place was not busy. The Peter Tavy Inn just down the road is much better value, better food, and consequently is always nicely busy. We will go there in future rather than the Elephant's Nest.
