Good Pub Guide Recommended
Well run, plenty of differing seating areas for both drinking and dining, several real ales, lots of coffees, wines by the glass, and quite a choice of fairly priced food
Very well run by an experienced landlord, this sizeable Georgian pub is handy for anyone driving round Norwich, or coming in from the south or west. It spreads around both downstairs and upstairs, giving plenty of different seating areas. In front of the dark wooden counter - where they keep Fullers London Pride, Greene King IPA and Abbot, and a house beer from Bass called Eagles Nest on handpump - are dark wooden dining chairs and tables, and a couple of cushioned settles on the grey floor tiles, pink paintwork above a green dado, a little green woodburning stove in the ornate wooden fireplace, and some fine giltwork in the ornate plastered ceiling. There's an area with high chairs around high tables and a comfortable sofa, and a cosy end room with four dark leather sofas around some low chunky tables; newspapers in a rack. The simply furnished, low-ceilinged dining room has plenty of pale wood, and up some spiral stairs from the bar is another, very nice contemporary dining room. Lots of coffees and decent wines; piped pop music and a couple of games machines. A 'conservatory' with chrome and bentwood chairs and wooden tables leads on to a sunny terrace with picnic-sets and a smart barbecue, and there are more seats on grass and a children's play area.Good Pub Guide Food
As well as a sensibly priced pubby menu, there's quite a range of fair-priced daily specials: sandwiches, soup, various platters, marinated king prawn kebabs with chilli and coriander, ham and egg, beefburger with courgette pickles, coq au vin, smoked haddock au gratin, risotto of lemon, pinenuts, fetta and sun blush tomatoes, wild boar and apple sausage with dijon mash and red wine gravy, gressingham duck breast with roast sweet potato and plum sauce and puddings like chocolate orange tart with vanilla ice-cream and apricot and apple crumble.
