Carefully updated inn with relaxed informal bar, good two-level restaurant, and lovely waterside garden; comfortable bedrooms
Good Pub Guide Recommended
What makes this handsome pub special is its waterside setting, standing between the River Kennet and the Kennet & Avon Canal, surrounded by lots of ducks and banks of spring daffodils. As well as picnic-sets on decking, the large, pretty back garden (with water on each side) has plenty of well spaced tables on grass among shrubs and trees. The big windows of the smart two-level restaurant overlook this scene. At the other end is a smallish bar, taking its relaxed informal mood from the cheerful helpful staff. Here, there are sporting prints above a high oak dado, neat little cushioned arts-and-crafts chairs around a few stripped or polished tables on broad floorboards, and high chairs by the counter (decorated with highly polished old penny pieces), which serves Tutts Clump farm cider from handpump as well as Ramsbury Gold, Ringwood Razorback and a guest from West Berkshire brewery, and 14 wines by the glass. Between the bar and restaurant is a cosy,tartan-carpeted sitting room with wing chairs and a splendid leather and mahogany settee, daily papers, a good winter log fire flanked by glass-fronted bookcases, and big silhouette portraits on topiary-print wallpaper. Pleasant nearby walks.
