Civilised inn with more informal feel during the day when popular with walkers - get there early for a seat; small smart bar with beams and oak boards, stools by slate-topped counter, leather club chairs, photographs, coaching and hunting pictures, own good Barngates ales, continental draught beers, 17 wines by the glass from fine list, good bar food from sandwiches up, more elaborate and pricey evening choice, three restaurant areas; children welcome, dogs in bar, tables and benches out on grass with spectacular fell views, profusion of spring and summer bulbs, good bedrooms, open all day

I can't believe that you have downgraded this pub to a lucky dip entry. It has consistently been a most civilised place for lunch. The home-brewed beer is one of the best ever (or so I am informed from one who knows) the food is excellent and there is plenty of room inside since they do not now do restaurant lunches, and although pricey it is consistent with the area
