Drewe Arms, Drewsteignton, Devon, EX6 6QN – The Good Pub Guide

Lucky Dip

Pretty thatched pub in lovely village, unspoilt room on left with basic wooden wall benches, stools and tables, original serving hatch, Hop Back, Otter and Sharps tapped from casks in tap room, local cider, tasty bar food in three dining areas, one with Rayburn and history of Britain's longest serving and oldest landlady, another with woodburner, back room with lots of prints, pictures and copper saucepans; children and dogs welcome, seats under umbrellas on front terrace and in garden, pretty flowering tubs and baskets, bedrooms and bunk rooms, handy for Castle Drogo, open all day in summer

We absolutely loved this pub! We booked here to take our in-laws on the first night of our holiday and we wanted to guarantee a table, but we popped in later in the week and were able to get a table without any problems. This is a picturesque pub full of character; delicious homely food with generous portions, warm and friendly service, good range of ales and ciders. We will definitely be returning here when we next visit the West Country!

A word of caution. This pub can and does close to its customers if it decides to host a function such as a wedding. It is worthwhile telephoning before travelling to avoid the disappointment of a rather curt refusal of entry. I guess that this warning will be particularly relevant to those travelling the "Two Moors Way". To arrive thirsty and hungry after many miles of walking only to be turned away unceremoniously would be enough for me to recommend removal of this pub from the "Good Pub Guide". Surely, a pub that prefers to host weddings than its regular public is not a good pub despite the fact that it might have excellent beer hidden away.
Every cloud has a silver lining. If you are in a car rather than walking, head for "The Tom Cobley" at Spreyton - only 10 minutes away. Incontrast to the Dew Arms, we were greeted by a truly warm and wonderful welcome despite at least two crowded Christmas functions running in the rooms at the back. Nothing was too much trouble and the choice and quality of the beer was some of the best I have had the pleasure to drink in a "Good Pub" recommendation.
