Culm Valley, Culmstock, Devon, EX15 3JJ – The Good Pub Guide

Lucky Dip

Quirky old dining pub with friendly lively atmosphere, good imaginative food (not Sun evening), interesting real ales and spirits, wines imported by landlord from smaller french vineyards, hotchpotch of modern and unrenovated furnishings (some find housekeeping a bit lapse), horse-racing paintings and knick-knacks, big fireplace, dining room and small front conservatory, larger back room with paintings by local artists for sale; no credit cards, outside gents'; children allowed away from main bar, dogs welcome (there are several pub dogs), outside seats overlooking River Culm, bedrooms, open all day Fri-Sun

Spent a delightful afternoon at this quaint country pub.
The food was tasty, the menu well thought-out and the price reasonable (£10 - £15) with a wide array of local ales on tap. The Doombar provided an instant juice up.
The barmaid was particularly friendly and had the necessary expertise to ensure that we had an enjoyable experience.
Minor issues we faced were that the food timings were extremely rigid, a number of lazy dogs and Richard the landlord, who happened to look very suspicious on this occasion.

We visited this wonderful quirky pub over the Christmas period and it was a delight. At first you might be mistaken for thinking you were entering someones house!! Once inside the welcome is warm, there were several ales on tap and the food being seved up looked worthy of the guides award.
This is a no thrills village local and well worth a visit.

We are fortunate to live very close to this pub! The food cannot be faulted. We've eaten there several times and have never been disappointed. The menu is different every time we visit which keeps things interesting. They do not have printed menus, instead there is a blackboard with the menu written on, which enables them to change it regularly. The pub itself is very quirky with lots of nooks and crannies. Good choice of real ales, wines etc. Visited today with my parents and I had a Simatran Lamb curry which was to die for.... this isn't like your average pub. The food varies between £7-£20 depending on what you choose. The only thing to bear in mind is that this pub does not accept cards of any kind, so you need to have cash or cheque book handy! Definitely worth a visit. We keep going back time and time again.
