Smart coaching inn with a friendly informal bar, local ales, good modern food and elegant restaurant; well equipped bedrooms

Overlooking a tree-lined green, this is a rather smart old coaching inn with a good mix of both drinkers and diners. The rambling bar is on several levels with beams and the odd standing timber and the contemporary décor includes burnt-orange walls hung with local photographs, grey-painted planked wall seats with orange cushions and high-backed dark brown leather dining chairs around wooden-topped tables on the stripped-wood floors; newspapers to read, an open fire, their own JoC's Norfolk Ale, Adnams Bitter and Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge on handpump, quite a few wines by the glass and several whiskies and brandies; helpful staff and piped music. There's an airy dining room with bookshelves and cushioned, grey-painted farmhouse chairs and tables on wide floorboards and an elegant, more formal restaurant, too. This is part of the growing group of Flying Kiwi Inns.

Good, modern food includes sandwiches, crab and fennel linguine with lemon dressing, quail, chicken and lentil terrine with pepper chutney, herb polenta topped with grilled chicory and blue cheese glaze, poached salmon with beetroot rösti and a cockle and horseradish dressing, and venison with roast vegetable purée and chestnut jus.
