Crown, Southwold, Suffolk, IP18 6DP – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Comfortable hotel with relaxed bars, a fine choice of drinks, papers to read, imaginative food and seats outside; bedrooms
Civilised and warmly welcoming, this smart hotel remains much loved by our readers. It's extremely well run by courteous staff and is just as enjoyable if you drop in for a drink and a chat or stay overnight in the restful bedrooms. At the back, there's a cosy oak-panelled locals' bar (reserved for drinkers) which has a proper pubby atmosphere, red leatherette wall benches on red carpeting, Adnams Bitter, Broadside, Explorer and a seasonal guest on handpump, 20 wines by the glass from a splendid list and quite a few malt whiskies. The elegant beamed front bar has a relaxed, informal atmosphere, a stripped curved high-backed settle and other dark varnished settles, kitchen chairs and some bar stools, and a carefully restored rather fine carved wooden fireplace; maybe newspapers to read. The tables out in a sunny sheltered corner are very pleasant.

Good Pub Guide Food

Tables are still on a first-come first-served basis so you do need to arrive early for the inventive – if not cheap – food: sandwiches, vodka-cured salmon with bloody mary jelly and fennel salad, braised pigs cheek with black pudding, caramelised leeks and wholegrain mustard jus, dressed crab with chilli mayonnaise, pork belly cooked in hay with apple and thyme sauce, and cod with wild mushrooms, roasted leeks and celeriac and pancetta lardons.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.30, 6.30 (6 Sat) - 9

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner time visit but you really do have to get there early for a table as it gets busy even on midweek evenings out of the main season. They don't rush you through your meal so you can always take your time over the aperitif if you like. They have a newish chel and there wasn't quite such an emphasis on fish as there has been but the food is beautifully cooked and presented. The bar at the back for drinkers is a lovely, cosy space.

To get a seat for lunch at this pub cum hotel on a Saturday lunchtime, you need to be early. It is a haven for locals and tourists alike and there are some real characters who attend, giving us a glimpse of what things were like some 40 years ago. The ambience is good and the staff are very efficient and friendly. Well kept Adnams Broadside, Bitter and Explorer. Food is served in two rooms at either side of the entrance and outside adjacent to the street at the front. The menu is changed slightly every week with delights such as fresh dressed crab and new potatoes at £13.50 A great experience all round.. Visited June 2011

This is a nice place to stay in Southwold, although if I was going to be picky some bits are in need of refreshing. As you'd expect, they keep their Adnams beers beautifully and have a smashing wine list - if you are eating, check out the bin end list as we drank a 2004 Langoa Barton claret at less than retail. Food is the big draw here, not just lunch or dinner but the breakfasts as well - they list a number of set ones but are happy to produce any variation on demand (if having bacon, the Broadside cure is gorgeous). Meat dishes are good but I think the kitchen's real love is fish. Turbot with saffron mash & brown shrimps and plaice with herb butter, new potatoes and samphire were beautifully cooked and perfectly seasoned. They're committed to being as green as possible and using as much local produce as they can.

We sat down for lunch at twelve on a fine and busy Saturday. The welcome was excellent. The drinks arrived swiftly. Alas the food took well over half an hour.to reach the table. We enjoyed pork, salmon and sweets (which arrived without a delay). When I commented on the delay, it was attributed to the pork but was thought to be excessive and my remark was accepted with good grace.

Being in the very heart of Adnams country, the beer was of a good standard.
