Good Pub Guide Recommended
Tucked away up a country lane, this is an attractive 16th-c pub run by a friendly and helpful landlady. The low-ceilinged and relaxed panelled bar has West Berkshire Good Old Boy and a guest such as Fullers London Pride on handpump, decent wines by the glass and several malt whiskies. Three areas radiate from here; our pick is the parquet-floored part by the raised woodburning stove which has a couple of substantial old tables and a huge old-fashioned slightly curved settle. Other parts are slate and wood with a good mix of well spaced tables and chairs, and nice lighting. There's a front terrace for outside eating, a lovely long side garden with picnic-sets, and plenty of good downland walks nearby. In a separate single-storey building, the bedrooms (many have been redecorated recently) form an L around a pretty garden. James II is reputed to have used the pub on his way to visit his mistress who lived locally.
