Good Pub Guide Recommended
Good oak chairs and tables on a raised terrace and one light and airy dining room with a curved wall of great big sash windows at this beautifully placed Brunning & Price pub have really lovely views over the River Dee sweeping past below; picnic-sets down on a lawn are even closer to the water. The ancient low-beamed bar, with its red tiled floor, dark timbers, a warm fire in the big inglenook and built-in old pews, is more traditional than you'd usually expect from this small chain, though the characteristic turkey rugs and frame-to-frame pictures are present, as they are in the dining areas; newspapers. Friendly competent staff serve Brakspear, Jennings Cumberland and a couple of guests from brewers such as Ringwood and Wychwood from handpumps, a farm cider, 50 malts, an excellent range of armagnacs and a changing choice of around 27 wines by the glass.
Good Pub Guide Food
As well as sandwiches, carefully prepared bar food from a tempting menu might include ploughman's, pressed ham hock and mushroom terrine, home-smoked trout with new potato, red onion and caper salad and mustard dressing, coq au vin with tarragon mash, crab, clam and mussel linguine, pork and sage sausages with champ mash, fried tiger prawn salad with roast peppers and courgettes and orange and chilli dressing, and rump steak with watercress and horseradish butter.
