Good Pub Guide Recommended
Rumour has it that the name of this skilfully refurbished and extended village pub comes from the preferred attire of a former landlord. Light and airy with flagstoned floors and pale grey walls, in places it has the feel of an upmarket barn conversion. A cosier room has high-backed settles and a fireplace at the end. The whole pub is packed with light wooden tables, and although you may find them all full on arrival, such is the size of the place that you probably won't have to wait long in the little bar area for one to come free. The sheer volume of satisfied customers ensures a good, chatty atmosphere and service is polite and helpful. Drinks include well kept Thwaites Bomber and Original and Wainwright and a good choice of wines. There are some tables outside, beside a small garden.
Good Pub Guide Food
Dishes here tend to be traditionally british, and the menu identifies many of their suppliers, some of whom can also be seen in photographs on the walls. Particularly good food includes well filled sandwiches, twice-baked cheese soufflé, cauliflower fritters with curried mayonnaise, fish pie, slow-cooked pork belly with garlic mash, cheese and onion pie, lancashire hotpot and well hung steak. There's a snack menu during the afternoon.
