Nicely traditional, friendly country pub with bags of character; good food and drink
Good Pub Guide Recommended
The small, snug interconnected rooms in this pretty brick building have all manner of nice old tables and chairs on wide floorboards, low ceilings, plenty of candlelight, and friendly young staff; it's best to book in advance to be sure of a table. The décor in soothing greys and dark green, with some oak-leaf wallpaper, is perked up by a collection of stuffed grouse and their relatives, and a huge variety of pictures; background music. Beartown Best Bitter, Mallorys Mobberley Best (George Mallory, lost near Everest's summit in 1924, is remembered in the church with a stained-glass window) and Tatton Church Ale-Alujah and Gold on handpump, and unusual and rewarding wines, with 16 by the glass; wine tastings can be booked in the upstairs private dining room. They give out a detailed leaflet describing a good four-mile circular walk from the pub, passing sister pub the Bulls Head en route. Dogs are welcomed in the bar with not just a tub of snacks on the counter, but maybe even the offer of a meaty beer'. The sunny garden snakes down to an old bowling green with lovely pastoral views and a side courtyard has sturdy tables and benches. The village church is opposite. The pub is owned by Tim Bird and Mary McLaughlin, who also own the Three Greyhounds in Allostock, Cholmondeley Arms at Cholmondeley, Bulls Head in this village (all Cheshire), Fitzherbert Arms in Swynnerton (Staffordshire) and the Red Lion in Weymouth (Dorset).
