Good Pub Guide Recommended
The warm can-do hospitable greeting from the licensees and staff really sets the tone at this welcoming village pub. The chatty low-ceilinged tiled bar has a warming fire and is traditionally furnished with cushioned built-in benches and simple chairs around polished cast-iron-framed tables - one or two still with their squeaky sewing treadles. Shelves of readable books, Tiffany-style lamps and house plants in the curtained windows, atmospheric Dales photographs and prints, and a coal-effect stove in the stripped-stone end wall all add a cosy feel. Adnams, Marstons Bitter and Pedigree and a couple of guests such as Burton Blonde and Wincle Sir Philip are on handpump; darts and pool in a tiled-floor games area on the left; TV, piped music and board games. The pub is in a quiet spot at the end of the road up to the moors, opposite a largely 18th-c church and prettily tucked into woodland. It has fine views over the village and the hills beyond from good teak tables on its two-level terrace.
Good Pub Guide Food
Sensibly priced food includes sandwiches, whitebait, creamy garlic mushrooms on garlic toast, chicken balti, chilli, stuffed vegetable crêpe with cheese and tomato sauce, steak and kidney pie, and daily specials such as shank of lamb with red wine and rosemary sauce, fie pie, battered haddock, and mushroom stroganoff.
