Bull, Broughton, Yorkshire, BD23 3AE – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Handsome, carefully refurbished inn making good use of pale oak and contemporary paintwork, good choice of drinks and enjoyable food
This handsome stone inn is a welcoming place whatever the season. In summer you can eat at the solid benches and tables on the terrace and look over the grounds of Broughton Hall, and in winter there are open log fires; you can walk through the Hall Estate's 3,000 acres of rolling countryside and parkland at any time of year. They've sensibly kept the various carefully furnished rooms separate: lots of pale oak, handsome flagstones, exposed stone walls, built-in wall seats and a mix of dining chairs around polished tables, contemporary paintwork hung with photographs of local suppliers and open log fires. Copper Dragon Scotts 1816, Dark Horse Hetton Pale Ale, and Thwaites Original on handpump, several malt whiskies and a dozen wines (including champagne) by the glass; if you are dining, they will let you bring your own wine for a £10 corkage fee per bottle.

Good Pub Guide Food

Interesting food using carefully sourced local produce includes sandwiches, nibbles with home-made bread, rabbit faggots with courgette purée and tomato relish, local seafood platter, a pie with braised veal tails, ham shank, smoked pig's jowl, button mushrooms, yellow split peas and broccoli, chargrilled minced rump steak with dripping chips and mustard mayonnaise on a toasted muffin, and seasonal sea trout with asparagus and wild garlic mash.

Lunch visit over Easter 2011. Large inviting garden. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Menu was varied and interesting. Good range of well kept cask ales. The computer system died while we were there, but staff managed to adapt and keep the service moving. Good alternative to The Tempest Arms in Elslack which can become VERY busy on holiday weekends.

Three of us went to the Bull as a result of a favourable review in a national newspaper, and we weren't disappointed. Reopened in June 09 - old flagstones and lots of new oak. Imaginative menu, well cooked and presented, and reasonably priced - we chose rabbit fried in breadcrumbs, sweet onion fritters, and mutton hotpot, followed by jam rolypoly with real custard, pancake (large) with chocolate and hazelnut filling, and home-made vanilla ice cream, all excellent. Four real ales on handpump, 50 wines (15 available by the glass), and 14 scotch malts and 1 Irish. The only criticism is that service when we were there (a Saturday lunchtime) was very slow, but we were warned in advance by the pleasant staff before we sat down that the kitchen was 'a bit behind', and we were kept informed on progress. Bookings only taken for parties of 6 or more, or for festive occasions, otherwise at busy times one's name goes on a blackboard and you wait your turn. We strongly recommend Main Entry status next year - provided of course the present high standards are maintained.
