Good Pub Guide Recommended
Very much the heart of the local community but with a warm welcome for visitors as well this friendly village pub has now been run by the long-serving licensees for 25 years. The pleasantly traditional bar on the right has upholstered old-fashioned wall settles on the carpet, a fine mahogany bar counter, a high shelf packed with ancient bottles, several mounted fox masks and brushes, and a brick fireplace. The Long Room (which overlooks the cricket green) has large prints of old Thornton Watlass cricket teams, signed bats, cricket balls and so forth. Barngates Mothbag, Black Sheep Best, Theakstons Best and Black Bull and Walls Gun Dog Bitter on handpump, a few wines by the glass and over 40 interesting malt whiskies; darts and board games. The sheltered garden has an equipped children's play area and summer barbecues, and they have their own cricket team; quoits.
Good Pub Guide Food
Popular bar food, using local produce, includes sandwiches, chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade, rarebit with home-made pear chutney, a choice of omelette, lasagne, beer-battered fish and chips, spinach and ricotta pasta, and specials like potato pancake with smoked salmon and chive crème fraîche and a mild chicken curry with almonds, sultanas and banana cream.
