Good Pub Guide Recommended
This charming inn now has its own microbrewery, up and running Winster Valley which produces Best and Old School, and they keep guests such as Kirkby Lonsdale Tiffin Gold and Lytham Lowther on handpump; also, a dozen wines by the glass, ten malt whiskies and raspberry lemonade and elderflower pressé. There's a chatty, bustling atmosphere in the bar which has beams and some half-panelling, stools and a mix of wooden chairs around pubby tables (each with a lighted candle), a woodburning stove in a little stone fireplace, and high bar chairs by the counter. The restaurant has a relaxed, informal atmosphere, high-backed leather dining chairs around attractive light and dark wood tables, more candles and fresh flowers. Piped music, TV, darts and board games. There's a front terrace with solid tables and chairs, and a side garden with views of the Winster Valley. Our readers enjoy staying here very much.
Good Pub Guide Food
Using their own Estate-reared and own-grown produce, the excellent food might include sandwiches, home tea-smoked mackerel with horseradish cream, home-smoked salmon and prawn fishcake with a soft poached egg and watercress mayonnaise, tomato and olive tagliatelle, pheasant and apricot sausages with red wine jus, trout from Ullswater with almond beurre blanc, corn-fed chicken with bacon and a light poultry cream, and 21-day- hung rib-eye steak with dripping-cooked chips and a creamed peppercorn reduction; they offer a good value two- and three-course set lunch menu.
