Boat, Lichfield, Staffordshire, WS14 0BU – The Good Pub Guide

Lucky Dip

Efficiently run dining pub, handy break for a meal off M6 toll; most emphasis on food with huge floor-to-ceiling menu boards, views into kitchen and dishes ranging from lunchtime sandwiches through light snacks to interesting main choices, cheery café atmosphere, bright plastic flooring, striking photoprints, leather club chairs and sofas around coffee tables and potted palms, more conventional and comfortable dining areas with sturdy modern pine furniture on carpet and views of disused canal, three well kept changing ales, ten wines by the glass, friendly service; piped music; children welcome, good wheelchair access, seats on raised decking, open all day Sun (food all day then too)

Returned for 3rd visit recently and although everything looked very much the same, the food was nowhere near as good as previous. More worrying was the slightly dismissive attitude and lack of interest. Needs to improve to meet it's previous well deserved reputation.

I can thoroughly recommend The Boat. We have eaten there several times and have always had a good meal at a reasonable price. There is a blackboard in the bar area with a varied choice on offer to appeal to all tastes. One can relax on comfy sofas or chairs with a pre diner drink and peruse the menu board while deciding what to order. Once you have placed your order you are then taken to your table. You can actually see the chefs at work through a glass screen at the rear of the bar area. Food is freshly cooked to order and well presented. There is also a good choice of wines at reasonable prices. The service is good and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Also the table are spaced reasonably well apart so you are not sitting too close to other diners. I would give this excellent pub four stars.
