Good Pub Guide Recommended
Although most customers are here to enjoy the excellent food or to stay overnight in the individually decorated bedrooms, this civilised but informal dining pub does have a proper small bar where drinkers and their dogs mingle quite happily with those waiting to eat. This big squarish room has high-backed antique settles and old windsor chairs on the turkey rugs and flagstones, ham-hooks in the high ceiling decorated with dried wheat, teazles and so forth, a delft shelf filled with appropriate bric-a-brac, several prints, sporting caricatures and other pictures, a log fire and daily papers. Black Sheep Best and Golden Sheep and Theakstons Best on handpump, and an impressive wine list with quite a few (plus champagne) by the glass; courteous, attentive service. Picnic-sets on the gravel outside look beyond the stone houses on the far side of the village green to Witton Fell, and there's a big, pretty back garden.
Good Pub Guide Food
Excellent and interesting - if not cheap food might include sandwiches, slow-braised pig's cheek with red wine sauce, black pudding and apple and parsnip purée, duck and orange parfait with sage and onion toast and piccalilli, home-made tagliatelle with pancetta, wild mushrooms, cream and truffle oil, poached fillet of smoked haddock on new potatoes topped with a poached egg, leek and mushroom sauce and gruyère, a trio of free-range herb-fed chicken (breast, thigh and drumstick) each with their own garnish, and chargrilled rib-eye steak with caramelised onion butter and duck fat potatoes.
