Big, popular inn with friendly staff, four real ales, well liked food and a neat garden; bedrooms
This bustling and handsome thatched pub has been in the same friendly family since 1912. The central bar covers three main areas: light beams, bar stools and a nice mix of wooden dining chairs around circular tables on the patterned carpet, three log fires, prints, horsebrasses and plenty of bric-a-brac on the walls, and Bass, Otter Bitter, St Austell Tribute and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump; attentive service. The public bar has darts, games machine and board games; skittle alley and piped music. There are seats on a terrace and in the flower-filled garden and a well designed wooden smokers' gazebo. Coastal walks are only about ten minutes away.

Good Pub Guide Food

As well as opening early for breakfasts, the well liked bar food includes sandwiches, potted crab with cucumber salad, lentil and vegetable chilli, burger with bacon and cheese, beer-battered fish of the day, and specials like ham hock and asparagus terrine and T-bone steak with mustard, tomato and herb butter.

Visited for an extended-family meal a couple of weeks ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Both the food and beer were excellent. Nice garden area, though no kids play area. Dogs allowed in the bar. Large car park across the road. Very handy for Sidmouth.
