Good Pub Guide Recommended
Run by genuinely friendly licensees, this former blacksmith's has plenty of walks from the door or just a short drive away; it's a quiet and comfortable place to stay. There are several neatly kept, traditionally furnished rooms and the warm lounge on the right has a log fire, upholstered banquettes and wheelback chairs around dark wooden tables on the patterned red carpeting, and country prints and other pictures on the walls. The restaurant is to the left, there's a long lounge opposite the bar, and another room up a couple of steps at the back. Cumberland Corby Ale, Geltsdale Brampton Bitter and Cold Fell and Yates Bitter on handpump, 20 wines by the glass and 30 malt whiskies; piped music, darts and board games. There are a couple of picnic-sets outside the front door with more in the back garden.
Good Pub Guide Food
Reliable, pubby food includes lunchtime sandwiches, creamy garlic mushrooms, vegetable curry, lasagne, sweet and sour chicken, beer-battered haddock, beef stroganoff, and specials like black pudding topped with wholegrain mustard, bacon and cheese sauce, liver, bacon and onion casserole, and duck breast in a port and plum sauce.
