Black Swan, Oldstead, Yorkshire, YO61 4BL – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

16th-c restaurant-with-rooms in remote countryside with first-class food, real ales, several wines by the glass and friendly staff; comfortable bedrooms
Of course, much emphasis is placed on the excellent food in this 16th-c restaurant-with-rooms but they do have a proper bar with real ales and you can be sure of a friendly welcome. This bar has beams and flagstones, furniture by 'Mousey' Thompson, window seats with soft cushions and pretty valley views, an open log fire, Black Sheep Best and Copper Dragon Best on handpump, 13 wines by the glass and several malt whiskies; courteous, attentive staff. The back dining rooms are comfortable and attractive. At the front of the building are some picnic-sets under parasols beneath the cherry trees. The well equipped ground floor bedrooms have their own terrace and breakfasts are highly thought-of. There are plenty of fine surrounding walks in the glorious National Park countryside. Please note that the bedroom price includes dinner for two.

Good Pub Guide Food

At lunchtime, the imaginative, beautifully presented food includes sandwiches, ham hock ballottine with cider jelly and apples, beer-battered haddock with pea purée, home-made sausages with mash and buttered greens, and a french-style rib of beef stew, with more pricey evening choices such as hand-dived king scallops with sweetcorn, chorizo and tortilla chips, confit and cured wild sea trout niçoise, slow-braised belly and soy-glazed pig's cheek with a pork and vegetable spring roll and pak choi, and gressingham duck breast with duck confit potatoes, braised chicory, french onion purée and sherry vinegar jus; they also offer a two- and three-course set lunch menu.

Bar food times: 12 - 2 (2.30 Sun) , 6 - 9; not Mon - Weds lunchtimes

This pleasant pub situated in the very quiet village of Oldstead has an increasing reputation for food and less of a watering hole. As far as we could see there was only one hand pump beer (Black Sheep) and one lager (Peroni) on the bar.

The staff are extremely helpful and attentive and the service is swift. The a-la-carte menu is limited but the food is well presented with starters at £9.95 to £13.50 ( four only); mains from £18.95 to £25.95 ( four only); puddings from £7.50 to £8.95 ( four only); There are daily specials of local meat, fish and game and there is a 7 course gourmet tasting menu. There is also a full vegetarian and childrens menu.and bar food and sandwiches are available at lunchtimes.
