Bustling town pub with wide choice of drinks, efficient staff, and good bar food

Always busy with a wide mix of customers, this is a well run town pub with friendly, knowledgeable staff. The one large open-plan, turn-of-the-century room has a large central bar, a nice collection of sizeable dark wood tables and comfortable chairs on the stripped-wood floor, board games and interesting old prints and photographs above a dark wood panelled dado on the cream walls. A spacious conservatory has similar furniture and lots of hanging baskets. Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Harveys Best, Jennings Cumberland, Theakstons Old Peculier and Thwaites Wainwright on handpump, 20 wines by the glass, around 100 malt whiskies and Weston's cider. The pretty flower-filled back terrace has plenty of garden furniture. The small car park is for staff and deliveries only but you can park next door in the council car park.

Good, bistro-style food includes sandwiches, ham hock terrine with piccalilli, a charcuterie plate (for two), smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes, lamb, leek and potato hash with a fried egg, potato, thyme and parmesan gnocchi with roast pumpkin, figs, spinach and sage veloute, and venison steak with braised chicory and a blueberry and star anise jus.
