Barley Mow, Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire, DE6 3JP – The Good Pub Guide

Lucky Dip

Unaltered and unchanging Jacobean house with particularly kind landlady (here for 30 years); pubby-feeling small main bar with antique settles on tiles or built into panelling, shuttered mullioned windows, coal fire, another room with low beams, built-in cushioned pews, oak parquet, landscape prints and small woodburner, five usually local beers, farm cider, cheap filled rolls and simple evening meals; no credit cards; children and dogs welcome, couple of benches out in front, good sized garden, stable shop, pretty hilltop village (you can walk to Carsington Water from here), bedrooms, nice breakfasts in flagstoned kitchen

An outstanding, unspoilt pub.

You'll only realise you've found The Barley Mow by the sign attached to a tree at the end of the pubs garden.

Inside the imposing stone building, the initial 'tap' room consists of an ever-burning fire, several substantial (ex-snooker-slate) tables, snug wall-hugging seating, and a smallish hatch from which the landlady serves local ales from five barrels, a further IPA from a flaggon, several quality real ciders, and assorted soft drinks and bar snacks. In short, everything a pub should be, with no unnecessary extras to spoil proceedings. There are additional rooms further into the pub, most commonly used when busy.

Harbouring locals nightly, The Barley Mow is a fantastic place to while away the hours, providing a superb atmosphere, outstanding (and inexpensive) quality ales/ciders, and a pub experience not to be missed. The two pub dogs (a yappy pug and an enormous lumbering gentle-giant of unknown breed) only add to the charm.

The BM also offers superb quality B+B accommodation, at £55 per night for two (more if you need feeding in the evening). Having visited four times (a fifth booked for next weekend!), I can vouch for the saliva-inducing full-breakfasts, cooked metres away from your seat in the ex-stable, beamed and stoned dining area, from what the landlady proudly claims to be quality local produce (the black pudding certainly tastes like it!).

All in all, The Barley Mow is an absolute must for any good pub lover. Go Now!

Just returned from a Saturday night stay over at the Barley Mow and I have to say this was one of the best nights away at a pub we've experienced - and we sampled a fair few!
The beer and wine was extremely reasonably priced, the evening meal (prepared by the landlady) was delicious and our room was clean and very comfortable. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable short break.
The Barley Mow is more than a bit special and the landlady is an absolute gem.

I have been wanting to visit this pub now for over 5 years since reading about it in the Good Pub Guide from earlier this decade, and I was not disappointed. A real pub with a real landlady and landlord and real locals. We were treated in a very friendly manner and enjoyed great beer in this remarkable old building. We stayed in the comfortable and reasonably priced bedrooms. The breakfasts were some of the best we have had in any pub from the Guide. We had an evening meal of rack of lamb, which again was very good. Looking forward to our next visit already.
