Armoury, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 1HH – The Good Pub Guide

Good Pub Guide Recommended

Vibrant atmosphere in interestingly converted riverside warehouse, run by enthusiastic young staff, good food all day, excellent drinks selection

‘A rare thing: a town pub that has the laid-back atmosphere of a country pub, yet has that buzz of being in the town' commented one reader of this very well run place in a former warehouse. With an initial wow factor, and lit by long runs of big arched windows with views across the broad river, the spacious open-plan interior is light and fresh, but the eclectic décor, furniture layout and lively bustle give a personal feel. Mixed wood tables and chairs are grouped on expanses of stripped wood floors, a display of floor-to-ceiling books dominates two huge walls, there's a grand stone fireplace at one end, and masses of old prints mounted edge to edge on the stripped brick walls. Colonial-style fans whirr away on the ceilings, which are supported by occasional green-painted standing timbers, and small wall-mounted glass cabinets displaying smoking pipes. The long bar counter has a terrific choice of drinks with up to eight real ales from brewers such as Adnams, Cottage, Hobsons, Slaters, Thwaites, Three Tuns, Weetwood and Worfield well kept on handpump, a great wine list (with 20 by the glass), around 50 malt whiskies, a dozen different gins, lots of rums and vodkas, a variety of brandies, and some unusual liqueurs. The massive uniform red brick exteriors are interspersed with hanging baskets and smart coach lights at the front, and there may be queues at the weekend. The pub doesn't have its own parking, but there are plenty of places nearby.

Good Pub Guide Food

Superbly cooked bar food, from an interesting daily changing menu, could include sandwiches, ploughman's, leek and potato soup, warm duck salad, grilled mackerel, welsh rarebit with poached egg, and main courses like like smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes, rump steak, or potato gnocchi with wild mushrooms.

The Armoury – 15th Feb 2010
Having eaten at The Armoury for many, many years on and off I thought it was high time I took my partner there to eat to make up for the awful Valentine’s meal the night before at Traitors Gate Brasserie.
I had the Pan fried Venison steak, dauphinoise potatoes and sweet red cabbage £16.95 which was delicious – no comments other than I would easily have this again and totally enjoyed it. My partner had the Steak burger with bacon, cheese, sun blushed tomato ketchup and hand cut chips £10.25 – I stole some of his chips I will admit to that as they could win awards for Worlds Best Chips. He thought the burger was delicious and would have it again.
We couldn’t help ourselves and had puddings too. I had the Warm chocolate brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce £5.10 which was more of an experience than just a pudding – it was heaven on a plate. I WILL be having this again I just hope I return in time before they change the menu – as they are good like that and keep their menu fresh and update it regularly. My partner had the Sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and ice cream £5.25 which he finishes rather quickly so I think it was just as good as my Brownie.
The Armoury never fails me – great atmosphere, rustic charm of mismatching chairs and tables, book lined walls, it was also really busy - not a table unfilled on a Monday lunchtime, which says a lot. They offer a wide selection of real ales, ciders, wines and spirits. My partner loves this Crabbies Ginger Ale which they stock and I had Thatchers Gold cider which was very easy to drink.
All in all 5 out of 5 and we will be back soon.

I have visited two other Brunning & Price pubs, the Corn Mill at Llangollen and the Glasfryn at Mold. Both are excellent, and they seem to have come up with a winning formula combining first class service with good food & drink. The Armoury certainly follows that formula and I think that it may be the best of the three. Thouroughly recommended.
