Good Pub Guide Recommended
With prompt cheerful service and a bustling atmosphere, this friendly place always has a good mix of customers. The neatly kept lounge has modern beams and stonework, a variety of tables including an attractive oval oak gateleg, cushioned window seats, winged seats against the wall, oil paintings by a local artist and a big winter log fire; the bar has old photographs and farming and fishing bric-a-brac on the walls. Diners can eat in the lounge or bar area or in the dining room at the back of the building (good for larger groups) and the menu is the same in all rooms. Bass, Butcombe Bitter, Otter Bitter and a changing guest on handpump well priced for the area; 75 malt whiskies (the tasting notes are really helpful) and quite a few wines by the glass. In summer, you can eat in the pretty garden and the hanging baskets and window boxes are lovely then; boules. They have wheelchair access and a disabled lavatory. Plenty of walks to the River Severn and along the many footpaths and bridleways, and St Arilda's church nearby is interesting on its odd little knoll with wild flowers among the gravestones (the primroses and daffodils in spring are quite a show).
Good Pub Guide Food
Fair-priced, popular food includes ciabatta sandwiches, devilled kidneys and mushrooms on herb bread, home-baked ham and free-range eggs, spinach and ricotta ravioli, smoked haddock and salmon pie, beef curry, and duck breast with a port and plum sauce; they also offer a good value two-course set menu (Monday-Friday lunchtimes, Sunday-Thursday evenings).
