Set in the unruffled hamlet of Frithsden, nr. Berkhamsted, The Alford Arms is a pretty Victorian pub, full of surprises. The flower filled garden overlooks the village green, which is a haven of tranquillity and historic Ashridge forest is right on our doorstep.
As soon as you step inside, you can’t help but get caught up in the lively, warm atmosphere, where the friendly team really enjoy looking after their customers. Our seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality along with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using fresh, local produce wherever possible.
Rich colours and fabrics provide a simple backdrop for the interesting collection of characters we have collected over the years. Always a pub first and foremost, there is something for everyone, which hopefully will justify the effort of trying to find us!

Good Pub Guide Recommended
You do need to book a table at this pretty Victorian pub as it's usually full to the brim with cheerful diners - though you might still find a few locals (and perhaps a jack russell perched on a stool) chatting at the bar. The fashionably elegant but understated interior has simple prints on pale cream walls, with blocks picked out in rich Victorian green or dark red, and an appealing mix of good antique furniture (from Georgian chairs to old commode stands) on bare boards and patterned quarry tiles. It's all pulled together by luxuriously opulent curtains; darts and piped jazz. All the wines on their list are european, with most of them available by the glass, and they've Sharps Doom Bar, Rebellion IPA and a guest brewer such as Tring on handpump. The pub stands by a village green and is surrounded by lovely National Trust woodland. There are plenty of tables outside.
Good Pub Guide Food
The seasonally changing menu might include rabbit and hazelnut terrine with onion jam, smoked mackerel and horseradish pâté, blue cheese and herb fritters with pea hummus, slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary dumplings and tomato jus, parmesan and chorizo crusted whiting with shallot butter, roast bream on pearl barley, courgettes and fennel with broad bean salad with a lemon and chilli dressing, and well hung steak.
