Thriving dining pub with a chic interior, good food from imaginative menu and a thoughtful wine list
Good Pub Guide Recommended
Lovely National Trust woodland surrounds this pretty Victorian pub, so many of the lunchtime customers are walkers - at other times, there's a cheerful mix of both locals and diners. The elegant, understated interior has simple prints on pale cream walls, with blocks picked out in rich heritage colours, and an appealing mix of antique furniture (from Georgian chairs to old commode stands) on bare boards and patterned quarry tiles. Sharps Doom Bar and a couple of guests such as Chiltern Beechwood and Tring Side Pocket for a Toad on handpump; also, 24 wines by the glass from a european list (quite a few sweet ones too) and a good choice of spirits; background jazz and darts. There are plenty of tables outside.
