Good Pub Guide Recommended

Consistently enjoyable village pub with a friendly atmosphere, good mix of locals and visitors, interesting bar food and real ales; bedrooms Handy for Byland Abbey, this bustling pub is in a pretty village below the Hambleton Hills. The two bars are neatly kept with plenty of simple character, pine farmhouse chairs and tables, some exposed stone walls, and log fires; the walls of the Poacher's Bar are hung with brewery memorabilia. From the panelled bar counter, the friendly staff serve Theakstons Best, Timothy Taylors Landlord and York Yorkshire Terrier on handpump, nine wines by the glass (quite a few from Mrs Walker's South Africa) and several malt whiskies; darts. The two restaurants are incorporated into a 17th-c former granary and there are seats outside.

What they say
The historic Wombwell Arms Wass is an unwrecked English country inn with stone flagged floors, beamed ceilings, log fire, real ales and real food.
It has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and is a lively blend of pub, restaurant and rooms.
No music, gaming machines or fast food.

Popular with locals, walkers, cyclists, families and visitors to nearby Ampleforth College.
Beautifully situated in the rolling hills and woodland of this quiet corner of the North York Moors National park. The romantic ruins of Byland Abbey are on the outskirts of the village.

We are a Free house. Our hand-pulled Yorkshire ales include Theakston’s Old Peculier, Theakston’s Best and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. We also serve more than 35 wines, with a selection of 9 by the glass.

Our 3 en-suite letting rooms were all refurbished in 2009.

Absolutely fantastic evening menu and food was divine. Service was not good on the night but the chef did a wonderful job and all food was served piping hot and all together which made up for it. Would definitely still recommend this pub.
