Good Pub Guide Recommended

Attractively modernised inn, popular locally, with a friendly welcome and nice food Very much the heart of a pretty Borders village, this is a modernised inn with a good mix of locals and visitors. It's one of only three places where you can taste draught Traquair ale, which is produced using original oak vessels in the 18th-c brewhouse at nearby Traquair House. They also keep Caledonian Deuchars IPA and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, and 40 malt whiskies; piped music and TV. The main bar has a warm open fire and there's a relaxed light and airy bistro-style restaurant with high chairs, and another log fire. The garden at the back has picnic-sets and a big tree on a neatly kept lawn.

Good Pub Guide Food

Quite a choice of bar food might include sandwiches and filled ciabattas, cullen skink, vegetarian lasagne, chicken and haggis with whisky sauce, pork chops with black pudding and apple mash topped with a poached egg, battered haddock with home-made tartare sauce, and steak in ale pie.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.30, 5 - 9; 12 - 9 weekends

Stayed here one night on way home from North Scotland. Felt it was nowhere near as nice as the GPG review. A very drab building and very basic bedroom. We had a reasonable steak and chips in the bar listening to local singers and wathching local ladies knitting but found it a rather depressing place to stay especially as we were the only guests. A very good breakfast
