Good Pub Guide Recommended

Civilised country village pub with a broad range of good food For many readers this pretty tile-hung village pub ticks all the boxes. It's family run and is jointly owned by a consortium of villagers who rescued it from closure, and with its good food and drink, lovely staff and friendly clientele it has the feel of a gently upmarket country local. The convivial beamed front bar has a winter log fire, Hogs Back TEA and a guest such as Fullers London Pride on handpump, a farm cider and perry; piped music. Tables in the attractive two-acre garden take in pleasant views over Thursley Common and 1,000-year-old Saxon church. The terrace has smart comfortable chairs around tables with parasols. A separate area has a big play fort, a barbecue and a charcoal spit-roast area which they use on bank holidays. It's well placed for heathland walks – ask at the bar for a walking map. Lucky visiting dogs and horses get a biscuit or carrot.

Good Pub Guide Food

Great care goes into the food here, with breads, ice-creams, parsnip crisps and so forth all made in house. Bar food takes in chicken liver parfait, beetroot cured salmon, ploughman's, sausage and mash with cavolo nero, toad in the hole, confit duck leg with goose fat beans, and steak and kidney pudding. In the evening there might be fried squid with guacamole, tempura soft shell crab, roast butternut ravioli, and beef cheeks braised in red wine; Sunday roast.

Bar food times: 12.30 - 2.15, 7 - 9.15; 12 - 3 Sun; not Sun evening
