Good Pub Guide Recommended

Stylish modern revamp, tremendous attention to detail, excellent regional food with a contemporary twist, interesting drinks Despite its size, this imaginatively converted and well laid-out pub has plenty of intimate corners; the areas closest to the bar are elegantly traditional with a couple of big stone fireplaces, rugs on polished floors and upholstered stools. Then there's a series of individually furnished and painted rooms with exposed stone walls, careful spotlighting and wooden slatted blinds, ending with another impressive fireplace. Staff are young and friendly and there's a good chatty atmosphere. The long bar counter (with elaborate floral displays) serves Bowland Hen Harrier, Lancaster Bomber and Wainwright, a dozen wines by the glass and unusual soft drinks such as locally made sarsaparilla and dandelion and burdock. Overlooking the Ribble Valley, the garden and terrace have tables and perhaps their own summer menu. You write your name on a blackboard when you arrive and they find you when a table becomes free - the system works surprisingly well.

Good Pub Guide Food

Food products are carefully sourced from small local suppliers, many of whom are pictured in black and white photographs on the walls, and located on a map on the back of the menu - the beef particularly is exclusive to here. As well as imaginative lunchtime sandwiches, there might be dishes such as beech and juniper smoked salmon, baked whitebait, smoked pigs jowl, good lancashire hotpot, curd cheese and onion pie, slow-cooked saddleback pork with garlic mash and gravy, and scampi and crispy squid with chips. You may need to order side dishes with some main courses; limited afternoon snack menu.

Bar food times: 12 - 8.30 (9 Fri, Sat, 8 Sun)

What a hidden gem. There is an excellent choice of beers, warm winter cider and Pimms and a huge selection of wines. The food is fantastic and the individually named rooms means you can find a corner to hide away. The open fires are kept roaring which just adds to the comfort. The service was first class - definitely worth a visit.
