BEWARE the food here is a rip off.
I ordered venison for Sunday lunch (even though it was the most expensive item at around £20). Firstly it took around 1 hour to arrive. When it did it consisted of 2 tiny pieces of venison (the size of 50p piece!). I complained and was told that vension was hard to get hold of and expensive!! I know! I just paid £20 for it (50% more than most other items)! Ridiculous excuse. TBH I felt this was bordering on dishonesty.
The area is beautiful, and at the weekends this place is always full of day trippers and hikers so they obviously don't have to bother with basics like service, quality or value.

This is a very pretty pub in a very pretty area. But comments below on poor customer service are true. Today we walked in for lunch and the waitress was extremely rude to my wife in front of our three young children when she (politely) asked if they were serving food. And so we left.
Although it looks beautiful from the outside, it has very much an inner London trendy wine bar feel inside. Come to this area for the breathtaking scenery...but bring your own food and drink!

I wish I had read the other reviews before eating at this pub. The food was "ok" but quite expensive. However the service was very poor. Our party of 9 sat down at 13:45 and there were 4 other smaller parties (2 - 4 people each) in the restaurant, 2 of which were on desserts when we arrived. The first courses took around 50 minutes to arrive. The main courses around 30 minutes after we had finished the starters, with one main course coming 10 minutes later. It took so long for the waitress to take the pudding order that we wrote it out ourselves and handed her a piece of paper!
In fairness, the staff were polite and friendly, but poorly managed and the kitchen was very slow.
For the prices charged the food needs to go from "ok" to "excellent", they need more kitchen staff (or quicker ones) and the waiting staff need managing.
Such a shame as the location in excellent and the interior is pleasant, clean and bright (certainly not the "dirty dump" described in January).

This pub is in a great location but sadly the quality did not match. I had lunch today with a friend at this pub, and chose the pork belly, a dish I have had on several occassions at other pubs. When it arrived, there was a small piece of pork, about 2 inches by 2 inches and about half of it was fat, not even crackling. When i complained I was told that pork belly can be fatty, seriously this was unacceptable, especially with the £14.50 price tag. To top it all, there was a long hair in my friend's meal which was the final straw. So even though we were offered a free dessert to compensate, I really don't think it's a place I would rush back to. I have no problems paying higher proices for decent food, they need to step up their game if they want to stay in business.

Nice spot but spoilt but poor customer sevice. Can't believe they wanted to charge one member of our party for extra gravy, refused to give me a Yorkshire Pudding with my lamb roast (even though was told I could have one at time of ordering) and price per pint of London Pride varied from round to round. Suggest that if they insist in employing cheap young staff the Landloards spend some time training them in customer service!

Totally agree with the other poster about this pub. Such a shame as a better location you couldn't ask for in the Surrey Hills. The pub is now a dirty dump and has to be loosing money! Went by there again today hoping it might have had a facelift but no such luck. After putting our head inside the door we left without even having a drink. Too bad.

This used to be one of our favourite pubs to eat at. It was run by a couple of guys who insisted the food and the welcome was good. It changed management a few months ago and it now seems that the quality of the food has dropped and the cost has gone up.
My wife and I went there for Sunday lunch and decided to just sit in the bar, we were served roast beef that appeared not to be from a roasted joint, rather, it appeared to be the pre-packed stuff. The meal was cold and well over-priced. Worse was to come, when presented with the bill we were charged an extra 10% on the bill as a service charge - we saw the waitress twice, 10 seconds to be told 2 roast dinners and then another 10 seconds to deliver the cold lunches, all at a cost of over £3.
This is such a shame as the pub is in a great location for walking on the south downs and used to be so good.
