Good Pub Guide Recommended

Pleasantly traditional pub in a coastal village, tasty bar food and local ales and cider; bedrooms Our readers have very much enjoyed their visits over the last year to this well run old brick pub. It's a comfortable place to stay, the food is honest, the beers well kept and you can be sure of a friendly welcome. The traditionally furnished main bar has benches, pews, captain's chairs and wooden tables on its tiled floor, a woodburning stove (left open in cold weather) and lots of sea prints. From the handsomely panelled bar counter they serve Adnams Bitter and Broadside, Grainstore IPA, Green Jack Lurcher Stout and Humpty Dumpty Little Sharpie from antique handpumps, Aspall's cider, a local lager and several wines by the glass; board games. A simple conservatory looks on to a back terrace, and the large garden is very pleasant, with its well spaced picnic-sets, two large anchors and enormous fig tree, and they may have Shakespeare performances in August. The RSPB reserve at Minsmere and nearby Dunwich Museum are certainly worth visiting and there are some of Suffolk's best coastal walks nearby.

Good Pub Guide Food

Listing their local suppliers, the highly thought of food includes chicken liver pâté with fig pickle, spinach and ricotta flan with roast endive, ham and free-range eggs, their famous fish and chips, and a pie of the day.

A visit to this pub is a pleasure not just for its location but also for its friendly staff, well kept hand pump Adnams Broadside and Bitter and excellent food with large portions that are served in the bar, on the terrace at the front of the pub, on a terrace behind the bar on the right and in a large sloping beer garden to the rear.
Dogs are welcome and they even provide individual bowls of water with a treat fro your favourite animal.
The pub is very handy for the beautiful shingle beach and the village, whilst not large, has some beautiful terraced cottages in the same row as the pub. There is excellent walking through the forest of Dunwich – a ramblers’ paradise.

We thought we'd left it too late for lunch - but food until 3pm was a good start. Simple food (cod & chips and ham,egg & chips) but really well cooked. Too many places spoil fried fish - this was crispy batter and moist fish. Excellent. Adnams on tap very drinkable too. And what a location....
