Convivial all-rounder with reasonably priced food and unspoilt charm, prettily placed by the village green One reader tells us that this happy place is surely one of the very best pubs in the Peak District' we put it all down to the hard-working and ever-cheerful landlady. Two homely linked front rooms are nicely traditional with low beams, some panelling and blazing log fires. There's a bigger back room with good-sized tables and large antique prints on its stripped-stone walls. Featuring local beers, the small bar counter has Abbeydale Absolution, Oakwell Barnsley and a couple of guests such as Buxton SPA and Blue Monkey 99 Red Baboons, a good choice of decent wines and several malt whiskies (all spirits are available as doubles for an extra £1); darts, shove-ha'penny, bagatelle, board games and piped music (evenings only). It does get very full at times, so do book if you want to eat here. Outdoor seating is on the pretty village green, which is covered in daffodils in early spring. A particularly interesting time to visit this village is during the annual well-dressing carnival (usually the last week in June), when locals create a picture from flower petals, moss and other natural materials.

Well liked good value bar food includes sandwiches, crayfish tail salad, lambs liver and bacon with horseradish mash, chicken leek and bacon casserole, fish and chips, spicy vegetable curry and salmon fillet with lemon dill butter, and daily specials such as smoked haddock chowder, and beef and chorizo in red wine. Unusually, there's an entire gluten-free menu too; Sunday roast all day.
