Good Pub Guide Recommended

Busy old pub in nice spot with neatly kept rooms, real ales and pleasing food The position of this 15th-c tile-hung pub is charming as it overlooks the village green and cricket pitch; picnic-sets make the most of this and there are more in the large side garden. The simple, traditional bar is popular locally and has leather-topped bar stools by the counter where they serve Greene King IPA and Abbot and a guest such as Thwaites Wainwright on handpump, several wines by the glass, farm cider and a special bloody mary; also, beams, a mix of wooden chairs and tables on the parquet flooring and an inglenook fireplace. Open right up to its apex, the dining room is spacious and airy with church candles and fresh flowers on light wood tables; a couple of comfortable sofas face each other in front of an open woodburning stove. The pub border terrier is called Gillie and visiting dogs may get a dog biscuit.

Good Pub Guide Food

To be sure of a meal, it's best to book a table beforehand: sandwiches (not Sunday), home-cured beetroot gravadlax with horseradish mousse, an antipasti plate, burger with cheese and bacon, shrimp, clam and smoked haddock risotto, free-range chicken caesar salad, and seared tuna steak with niçoise salad.

Bar food times: 12 - 2.30, 7 - 9.30; 12 - 3.30 Sun; not Sun evening
