Good Pub Guide Recommended

Remarkable range of real ales, delightfully eclectic layout and décor, and warmly welcoming atmosphere Few pubs can have as many real ales as this popular little place. If you struggle to choose from the range of 14, the cheery staff will happily offer you a taster. House beers are Banks's, Bathams, St Georges Charger, Friar Tuck and Dragons Blood, Sharps Doom Bar, Woods Shropshire Lad and Wychwood Hobgoblin, and they've seven changing guests - last year they got through over 500. They also keep two farm ciders, over two dozen malt whiskies and ten gins. A series of snug individually decorated rooms, with one or two steps between and two open fires, have an easy-going chatty atmosphere. Each is characterfully filled with all sorts of chairs including leather armchairs, pews sometimes arranged as booths, a mix of tables with sturdy ones stained different colours, bare boards here, flagstones there, carpet elsewhere, and plenty of interesting pictures and homely touches such as house plants, shelves of well thumbed books and broadsheet newspapers; board games. There are picnic-sets and rustic tables and benches on the front terrace (with heaters and umbrellas) and in the garden.

Good Pub Guide Food

Tasty lunchtime bar food, served in generous helpings, includes good sandwiches, soup, chicken curry, stuffed mushrooms, and fish and chips. In the evenings, meals are served in the barn extension dining room only and might include scallops with balsamic vinegar, chicken liver pâté, beef bourguignon, fish of the day, and steaks.

Bar food times: 12 - 2 (2.30 Sun) , 6.30 (7 Sun) - 8.30

We had a fantastic night here last week. I started with a pint of charger - amazing selection of beers. They were also good value. The staff were also very good. looked after us but not intrusive. I had the smoked mackerel and horseradish pate with granary toast. 6.30. Plenty of pate very tasty nice bread too.

My wife had the poached haddock served with a poached egg and rarebit sauce. big piece of fish well cooked. 13.50

I had the pan fried chicken breast served with a wild mushroom and tarragon sauce 12.90. The chicken was moist the sauce very nice.

We had a nice mix of vegetables all cooked well.

We also had the cheeseboard good value at 5.00.

Amazing range of local beers and ciders. Really good food on offer both in the bar and the restaurant. Big plus that they allow dogs in aswell. Always a good atmosphere in The Nags!
