Good Pub Guide Recommended

Handy after a walk with a simple bar and more comfortable lounge, bar food and five real ales; bedrooms Homely and old-fashioned, this simple slate-roofed stone inn is a useful place if you've been walking around the nearby Derwent Valley and Reservoir. The straightforward locals' bar has an original boarded ceiling, pine tables, chairs and stools, old oak pews and a mahogany counter. The comfortable lounge bar (warmed by a woodburning stove) and restaurant both have picture windows that make the most of the lovely setting. Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Greene King Old Speckled Hen and Ruddles County, Timothy Taylors Landlord and a guest beer from a brewer such as Concertina are on handpump alongside 70 malt whiskies; TV, darts, board games and piped music. There are rustic tables in the garden.

Good Pub Guide Food

Usefully served all day, bar food includes sandwiches and wraps, sausage and mash, fish pie, pasta of the day, and daily specials such as baked vegetable pancake with cheese sauce, fried scallops with sweet chilli sauce, confit duck leg with sweet chilli noodles, peppered venison loin with red wine jus, and roast trout with chorizo.

Much more interesting food than is described in this report. Excellent and creative specials, including usually some game dishes. Always good selection of well kept ales and ciders, some fine wines.
