Country pub in idyllic riverside spot; decent range of beers, pubby food
One of the main attractions at this cheery stone-built 16th-c inn is the idyllically sited garden. In summer you can relax at picnic-sets among willows and aspens on grass leading right down to the River Nene - you can even arrive by boat and moor here. Inside, there's an uncluttered simplicity (maybe too much so for some) to the very welcoming partly stripped-stone main bar, which has pleasant old worn quarry tiles, solid pale pine furniture with a couple of cushioned wall seats, and a leather-upholstered chair by the woodburning stove in the fine inglenook. The bare-boards public bar has similar furnishings and another fire; steps lead up to a games room with darts, dominoes and table skittles, and there's more of the pale pine furniture in an attractive little beamed dining room. They keep three beers from local Digfield and usually have around three changing guests from brewers such as Daleside, Marstons and Phipps, and about a dozen wines by the glass.

Good Pub Guide Food
Pubby food includes sandwiches, ploughman's, burger, chicken liver pâté, potted crab, tomato, basil and goats cheese quiche, lamb breast with red currant reduction, and seared tuna on a niçoise -style salad.
Great pub. Very good real ales, the (evening) food was superb and, for the quality on offer, reasonably priced. My wife commented on how welcoming it all was from the outset. Staff very friendly and efficient.

In response to the comments made by rutlander I must agree with angry. We have recently visited the Kings Head and we had a wonderful time and the food was delicious. All the staff were very attentive and engaged in conversation, including the manageress. If food is being freshly cooked ,it is reasonable to expect a delay between courses. I would much rather this than have food that is ready prepared and just reheated ! And of course the ales are brilliant too !! Carry on the good work, Kings Head team.

To Rutlander, we were there on sunday, we go every weekend the chef is the same young man who was there a year ago under the previous owners, we found the food and the service to be very good as it is every time we go down. The atmosphere is very good mostly because people like you tend to go to other places where they can act like they are important but in reality they are no differant to me or anyone else. I hope that review doesn't put the young team off what they are doing keep up the good work see you again soon.

Sadly we had a really unpleasant meal here today. We went a few times last Summer and experienced great food and hospitality, but the pub has apparently changed hands since to the "care" of a quite stunningly rude blonde woman (BW)! Firstly we mistakenly sat on an outside table which we were told was reserved (there was no sign on it) and moved to another which was also reserved, but not until 3pm (we arrived at 12.45). Previously bar food was available in the large garden, which we would have preferred, but apparently they no longer do this on a Sunday so we decided to pay the extra and have an a la carte meal. I did mention this to the BW but she inferred the previous owners didn't know what they were doing and the people wanting to eat in the garden only came in the Summer, so didn't matter anyway (as we only go in the Summer, I did feel a bit put out by this). After being moved we ordered starter and main. Starter took a bit longer than expected, but was nice so we were happy. The staff seemed very tense and unhappy compared to last year, when they were chatty and friendly; I did hear BW snapping at them a couple of times. Before the atmosphere in the pub has been very relaxed and cheerful.
While we waited for our main course, quite a few disgruntled people came and were turned away because they wanted food (plebian Summer people like us presumably). There was quite a bit of grumbling from the tables next to us about the wait, and then the actual food when it did eventually arrive.
We waited a full hour after we finished our starters before our main courses arrived. Husband had roast beef, which was average at best, I had duck breast which was really nasty and I only managed to eat two bits. It was really overcooked and tasted like rubber, and the "parsnip puree" that came with it resembled lumpy custard.
When I complained to BW she told me I was the first person who had ever complained about the food, so feeling back-footed I said that I had heard the other tables complaining too. What did she do? March out and very loudly ask both tables if the food was OK as she had been told they didn't like it! Of course they were very embarrassed and mumbled that it was fine. I told BW to leave it because she had made her point.
We were not given any discount from our bill for this really humiliating experience and disgusting food.
I would not recommend this pub to anyone unless you want to eat vile food and be insulted! Such a shame, as a year ago it was lovely.

Me and my family went down on our boat to The Kings Head, where we received a warm welcome, there was a long queue at the bar, one of the staff members pointed us to the beer garden where somebody came to take our order, we received our drinks and managed to get a food order in as well the food was fantastic and the service great, this is a real gem of a pub,,,,,so do give it a go........

Had the opportunity to do the Nene river walk last weekend and came across the Kings Head, what a perfect location. Sandwich was lovely and the beer cold. Going to make a point to go back to watch the sunset across the river with a steak and a bottle of rose, I think.
Lovely pub, Thank you

This pub is a gem. Warm, welcoming and dog friendly, fine real ales and wonderful food. Located near to the Lyvedon walk, you can even burn off most of the calories that you consume here !!!!

I can't believe the King's Head only gets three stars out of five. My wife and I have been going there for a few years. We've always found the beer, food and service to be great. We keep going back, even though it's a six mile walk to an from home.
