Old pub in charming village with comfortable big bar, a fair range of drinks, and bar food cooked by the landlord; attractive bedrooms This partly 15th-c inn is in a charming village. The heavy beamed, spacious and comfortable bar is carefully laid out to give a degree of intimacy to its various candlelit tables and there are a couple of high-backed settles and squashy leather sofas on the patterned carpet in front of a warm log fire. Also, lots of hunting and other country pictures, brass and copper ware, and daily papers to read. Steps lead up to a good-sized back high-raftered dining room. Butcombe Bitter, Dorset Jurassic and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump and nine wines by the glass; piped music, board games and skittle alley. There are a few picnic-sets out on a neat lawn.

Good Pub Guide Food

Bar food cooked by the landlord includes sandwiches, game terrine with chutney, lasagne, toad in the hole, chicken breast with crispy parma ham and garlic butter, and slow-cooked leg of lamb with rosemary and cardamon jus; Monday night is steak night.

Visited The Helyar Arms for lunch today. There seem to be very mixed reviews for this pub. Building is more atttactive from the outside than in. I was alone but was made to feel very welcome. Yes, the decor is a bit tired but the staff did seem to care that I enjoyed the visit. Had a monkfish dish, water and coffee. Did not get a chance to try the beer as driving. Will visit again.
