Good Pub Guide Recommended

Interestingly decorated Edwardian pub with a fine choice of drinks and popular food With Kent now boasting three Brunning and Price pubs, this roomy mock-Tudor former hotel, dating from 1901, was one of the first in this much-liked chain to open in the South East. Insid, it' s high-ceilinged and the rooms have been knocked through, with plenty of light flooding through large windows, especially in the front bar where drinkers tend to gather. Décor, more or less in period with the building, runs from dark-painted dados below light walls, 1930s oak furniture, light brown carpet and turkish-style rugs on stained wooden floors to old romantic pastels and a huge collection of chamber-pots hanging from beams. Greene King IPA, Abbot, Morland Original and Ruddles, alongside a couple of guests on handpump, lots of wines by the glass, over 100 whiskies and a fine choice of vodkas and other spirits; board games. French windows open on to a big terrace with picnic-sets and pleasant views of the tree-ringed village green. Parking is limited.

I usded to go to this pub quite regularly but hadn't been for a couple of years. It was a real favourite- I love the setting and the bulding itself is really great and full of character. However, I went back there recently with a friend and was really disappointed with the service and food. It was very pricey for the quality and quantity served- you can get much better elsewhere. The summer pudding was one of the worst I have ever tasted. It was made with sponge, not bread and the texture was therefore heavier and the taste sickly and sweet. What a pity- I wouldn't go back.
