Good Pub Guide Recommended

Carefully renovated old coaching inn, warmly welcoming, informative canadian landlord, bar food cooked by landlady, good local beers, attractive garden; bedrooms Mr Graham is a first-rate landlord who offers a genuinely warm and interested welcome to all his customers. The main bar has some stripped stone, dark wooden tables and chairs and more comfortable seats, winter log fires in inglenook fireplaces and the family grandfather clock; a snug area has recently been added with a stone fireplace and woodburning stove. The attractive dining room has more stripped stone, local artwork and photographs on the burgundy walls and high-backed cushioned dining chairs around a mix of tables. The back bar has canadian timber reclaimed from the local church and there's a family room with games and books for children. King George the Thirst (brewed exclusively for them by Blindmans), Butcombe Bitter, Cheddar Ales Totty Pot and Moor Revival on handpump or tapped from the cask, four farm ciders and ten wines by the glass. Darts, shut the box, a canadian wooden table game called crokinole, shove-hapenny, piped music and separate TV room. The friendly pub dog is called Tessa. The attractive, sizeable garden has seats on the heated and covered terrace, flower borders and a grassed area; children's swings.

Visited mid-October this year - an English country pub as it should be! We were made to feel most welcome, the log fire was wonderfully warm and well tended, the family dog Tessa was very friendly when awake (!), the beer was clearly well kept, (recommend the King George), newspapers were there to read, the steaks were perfectly cooked ... we could go on. We enjoyed it so much we went back a second time and would again if we were in the area. We would recommend The George to everyone. Well done, Peter, Veryan and Pat.
