Good Pub Guide Recommended

Pretty white cottage with stylishly airy décor and an enterprising menu Much enjoyed by readers, this warmly welcoming place is run with attention to detail and attracts both drinkers and diners alike. The tiled bar is dominated by a big log fireplace and has stools along its counter. A bigger uncluttered dining area has attractive rugs and an eclectic mix of period tables on polished oak floorboards, with extensive wall panelling hung with framed old prints. Outside is plentiful seating on a terrace and in the garden, which contains old fruit trees and a tractor. Real ales include Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Weetwood Eastgate and a couple of guests such as Morlands Original and Weetwood Cheshire Cat; good array of wines, with 20 by the glass.

Good Pub Guide Food

As well as sandwiches and ploughman's, the changing menu might include roast tomato soup with pesto, venison faggot with celeriac mash and shallot sauce, scallop, pork belly and black pudding salad with caper dressing, seared salmon with chorizo, mussel and smoked haddock stew, chickpea and aubergine moussaka, mushroom and black truffle gnocchi with madeira butter sauce, and cottage pie.

Friendly service with attention to detail, excellent wine list, nice range of well kept ales and great food. Very popular with the Cheshire ladies that lunch!

As a visitor of pubs throughout the Cheshire region predominantly, I have found the Fox & Barrel to be a jewel within Cheshire. As a family with 2 children under 5 (which can possibly be quite testing to some landlords), we have always been made to feel welcome at the Fox & Barrel and I delight in visiting this pub/restaurant with my children. The childrens menu is superb & the food never disappoints. The unique selling point for me with the Fox is that I can visit in the day with the children & have a great time....however I can also visit in the evening and experience a wonderful dining experience in a beautiful Cheshire Restaurant.....and everyone needs a little adult time....see you soon Fox and Barrel...

This was a pub we used to like - but no more.
We went for a light lunch. A request for a chicken sandwich to come without mayonnaise was refused "because the sandwiches were prepared in the morning." When they finally arrived (despite the above comment) after about 20 minutes, they were terrible. Sliced white bread and a small helping of tired salad

We didn't have a chance to sample the food as we were practically thrown out the moment we got through the door! What had we done wrong? Well, we'd had the audacity to bring our son in - in a pushchair! I'd told the pub we were bringing a baby for Sunday lunch, and they were fine with that - but my one year old son had fallen asleep in the car and, pretty reasonably, we thought the best plan was to bring him in, whilst he slept quietly in his pushchair - but no! We'd hardly stepped over the threshold when the landlord basically threw us out: he wasn't even remotely apologetic and just shouted 'no prams or pushchairs!' and made us feel completely humilated. We will never go back here and recommend that anyone with children (or even without for that matter) gives this pub a very wide berth...
