Well run pub with a variety of seating areas for both drinking and dining, real ales, lots of coffees, wines by the glass, and quite a choice of fairly priced food Handily open all day, this sizeable place spreads around both downstairs and upstairs, giving plenty of different seating areas. There are comfortable sofas and armchairs by the open fire in its ornate fireplace, white-painted chairs around pine tables on tiled or stripped-wood flooring, cream paintwork above a red dado and more sofas and straightforward pubby seating in a cosy end room. There's also a low-ceilinged dining room and a spiral staircase in the bar leading to another dining room with high-backed brown leather chairs around various tables on pale floorboards. Greene King IPA and a house beer from Bass called Eagles Nest on handpump and decent wines; piped music. A 'conservatory' with chrome and bentwood chairs and wooden tables leads on to a sunny terrace with picnic-sets and a smart barbecue and there are more seats on grass.

Popular food includes sandwiches, spiced lamb terrine with mango purée, thick ham and a duck egg, caramelised onion and blue cheese tart, salmon and haddock fishcakes with lemon mayonnaise, chicken breast wrapped in parma ham with a saffron cream sauce, and monkfish and prawn curry.
