Emphasis on imaginative food though a proper public bar too; real ales, several wines by the glass, interesting sporting memorabilia, and a pretty garden; bedrooms Although the exterior here is slightly plain looking, it fronts a particularly well run pub which is very much the hub of the village, offering a warm welcome from friendly staff and top quality imaginative food. There are some bar chairs around the light, modern bar counter (used by the chatty locals), a few beams, pale wooden dining chairs and tables on the light wood or patterned carpeted floors, plush red banquettes around the windows and a couple of log fires in brick fireplaces. A fair amount of sporting memorabilia and pictures, especially old rowing photos (the pub is very close to Henley) and signed rugby shirts and photographs (the pub runs its own rugby club), plus some maps of the Thames are hung on the red walls, and there are flowers and large house plants dotted about. It all feels quite homely, but in a smart way, with some chintzy touches such as a shelf of china cow jugs. Fullers London Pride, Loddon Hoppit and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, 40 malt whiskies and a dozen wines by the glass. There's a separate dining room and a small room for private family or business groups. The pretty garden has a proper covered barbecue area, smart teak furniture under huge parasols and some rather fun statues made out of box. There's a timber play frame for children. The bedrooms are well equipped and comfortable - we' d love to hear from readers who have stayed here.

Two miles from picturesque Henley-on-Thames in the village of Lower Shiplake. A 4 star Inn with a 2010 Visit Britain Silver Accolade, sitting on the Thames Path and 150m from Shiplake station.

It is the perfect blend of traditional village pub, award winning restaurant and superb accommodation. Internally, it retains a warm and homely atmosphere with with roaring log fires in the winter and a delightful garden in the summer.

The bar with its rugby and sporting memorabilia is a favourite with the locals and features three cask ales and over 40 malt whiskies.

Seasonal menus created by Head Chef, Marc Price, are based on modern British classics with Eastern and continental influences. All dishes are prepared from fresh ingredients and cooked to order.

The wine list contains 50 wines, 12 by the glass.

Usefully open for food all day including a fine breakfast from 9.30am, there might be open sandwiches, goats cheese and rosemary pannacotta with a sweet and spicy tomato relish, steak and kidney in ale pie, chicken saltimbocca with spring onion mash and smoked aubergine caponata, rolled, slow-cooked lamb with apricots, paprika and mustard, and scallops and tiger prawns with pasta, garlic, Pernod, cream and herbs; they also offer a two- and three-course set menu.
