Good Pub Guide Recommended

Vibrant atmosphere in interestingly converted riverside warehouse, enthusiastic young staff, good food all day, excellent drinks' selection A terrific all-rounder, and a lot of fun too, this lively former warehouse is light and fresh with an amazingly long run of big arched windows giving views across the broad River Severn. The spacious open-plan interior has a comfortable mix of eclectic décor and a nicely intimate furniture layout, giving it all a personal feel despite the vast space. Mixed wood tables and chairs are grouped on expanses of stripped-wood floors, a display of floor-to-ceiling books dominates two huge walls, there's a grand stone fireplace at one end and masses of old prints mounted edge to edge on the stripped-brick walls. Colonial-style fans whirr away on the ceilings, which are supported by occasional green-painted columns, and small wall-mounted glass cabinets displaying smoking pipes. The long bar counter has a terrific choice of drinks, with up to eight real ales from brewers such as Phoenix, Purple Moose, Salopian, Shires, Six Bells and Woods on handpump, a great wine list (with 16 by the glass), around 50 malt whiskies, a dozen different gins, lots of rums and vodkas, a variety of brandies, some unusual liqueurs and a great range of soft drinks. The massive uniform red brick exteriors are interspersed with hanging baskets and smart coach lights at the front; there may be queues at the weekend. The pub doesn't have its own parking, but there are plenty of places nearby.

Good Pub Guide Food

As well as interesting sandwiches, tempting food, from a daily changing menu, could include ploughman's, mackerel and ginger pâté with pickled cucumber and celery salad, crab cakes with sweet chilli jam, butternut risotto with apple and rocket salad, grilled bass fillet with prawn, chilli and lime linguine with pak choi and spinach, battered haddock with mushy peas, fried venison with braised red cabbage, and steak burger topped with mozzarella.

Bar food times: 12 - 10 (9.30 Sun)

The Armoury – 15th Feb 2010
Having eaten at The Armoury for many, many years on and off I thought it was high time I took my partner there to eat to make up for the awful Valentine’s meal the night before at Traitors Gate Brasserie.
I had the Pan fried Venison steak, dauphinoise potatoes and sweet red cabbage £16.95 which was delicious – no comments other than I would easily have this again and totally enjoyed it. My partner had the Steak burger with bacon, cheese, sun blushed tomato ketchup and hand cut chips £10.25 – I stole some of his chips I will admit to that as they could win awards for Worlds Best Chips. He thought the burger was delicious and would have it again.
We couldn’t help ourselves and had puddings too. I had the Warm chocolate brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce £5.10 which was more of an experience than just a pudding – it was heaven on a plate. I WILL be having this again I just hope I return in time before they change the menu – as they are good like that and keep their menu fresh and update it regularly. My partner had the Sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and ice cream £5.25 which he finishes rather quickly so I think it was just as good as my Brownie.
The Armoury never fails me – great atmosphere, rustic charm of mismatching chairs and tables, book lined walls, it was also really busy - not a table unfilled on a Monday lunchtime, which says a lot. They offer a wide selection of real ales, ciders, wines and spirits. My partner loves this Crabbies Ginger Ale which they stock and I had Thatchers Gold cider which was very easy to drink.
All in all 5 out of 5 and we will be back soon.

I have visited two other Brunning & Price pubs, the Corn Mill at Llangollen and the Glasfryn at Mold. Both are excellent, and they seem to have come up with a winning formula combining first class service with good food & drink. The Armoury certainly follows that formula and I think that it may be the best of the three. Thouroughly recommended.
