Had two dinners there this w/e - we were staying in a nearby B+B in the charming village. We felt as we had two consecutive excellent meals that this is a special place and deserves the recognition it has achieved.
It is clearly a place for locals and visitors - both sets of customers are enjoying the excellent food and drink and service.
The first day we had the Anchor Inn Smoked platter - the small size @ six pounds. It was a nice mixture of meat and fish and a side salad.
My wife then had the fish and chips with 'fat' chips and mushy peas. The fish was moist and the batter perfect. Ten pounds.
I had a fantastic steak and kidney pudding with savoy cabbage. I need not have ordered the skinny fries @ two pounds fifty pence. The gravy was brilliant and the whole dish very enjoyable.
As we were so full we did not have a dessert.
The following night we had a garlic bread starter - a huffer type of bread again very nice - two pounds. My wife had the burger ( there were two in the bap ) with jalapeno and cheese with a sweet chilli sauce fries and salad. At nine pounds fifty pence a very good value meal and very tasty.
I had the duck with mixed vegetables gratin potatoes bread sauce and port jus - twelve pounds fifty pence. Very good duck , lovely sauce and vegetables. We had the profiteroles for dessert with hazelnut cream and chocolate five pounds fifty pence.
All the other meals we saw looked very good.
I tried two of their beers - the IPA and the Adnams both kept very well. The wine list was good and reasonably priced. We tried a glass of the 'local' white wine.
The staff on both nights were very helpful and looked after us well. If they did not know the answer to something they went out of their way to find out.
The pub has several neat ideas to attract customers like a loyalty card - spend ten pounds and get one back. Our B+B also had a voucher entitling us to a free drink each. The pub's smokehouse burnt down on November 5th but will be rebuilt at some point.
