Good Pub Guide Recommended

A good mix of customers in busy old pub with four ales, fair value food and seats by a fantastic array of hanging baskets and tubs There's a bustling atmosphere in this ancient pub and an interesting mix of customers from choristers, regulars and those off on a Ghost Walk (which starts from here May-October; the pub offers a ‘spooky meal' plus the walk for £10). The building is thought to date back to at least 1249 (when it was used by workmen building the cathedral) and even has a Saxon well beneath the lower bar floor; the striking dutch gables were added in the 14th and 15th centuries. The little old-fashioned bars have antique high-backed settles, cushioned benches built into partly panelled walls and tiled or parquet floors. Adnams Bitter, Theakstons Old Peculier, Wells & Youngs Bombardier and a guest such as Mauldons Mole Trap on handpump, over 40 malt whiskies, 11 wines by the glass and Aspall's cider; piped music. There are picnic-sets by the award-winning colourful tubs and hanging baskets.
