Beer and Dates?

Beer and Dates - A Match made in Heaven?

First dates can be pretty nerve racking, so we were surprised to learn this week that on first dates, 96% of men are so daunted by the wine list that they prefer to shy away from it, letting the woman decide. This research from a wine company found that these men were unsure of the differences between types of wine, making them hesitant to pick out a type in case it was the wrong choice! As wine is the most popular first-date drink, with over half (54%) surveyed in our Love Beer questionnaire saying that it’s their drink of choice while dating, we weren’t expecting to hear that it could potentially make your date even more nervous.

You’ll probably find our recommendation less surprising: here at BitterSweet we’re keen advocates of choosing beer on a date. It makes sense, if you’re nervous about your choice of drink: while beer also has many different types and can be as subtle and rewarding as wine, there’s no stigma surrounding a lack of beer knowledge. What’s more, it could work in your favour – two fifths (44%) of men we polled claimed that they would be pleasantly surprised if a woman orders beer on a first date, and 26% would be secretly pleased if you did! How do you think pubs could make choosing a beer on the first date more appealing to patrons? If it was served in a nice glass, like a Champaign flute would this make a difference?

What do you think? Could ordering a beer be the way forward on date?

I hate people who post statistics then say contradictory things.

As the numbers do say, and as is my opinion as a non-beer drinking man, probably not. Unless both the woman and the man like beer, they shouldn't order beer. I'm all for everybody ordering what they like.

Plus, it doesn't take more knowledge for wine than beer. Red or White, dry or sweet. That's mostly what you need to know.
