Kent Brewery - the making of a brewery part 1

The brewery industry is in the midst of a revolution. Competition and innovation have crept into a once tired and monopolistic marketplace and we, the consumer, are seeing the benefits in our local pubs. New beers from unknown breweries are increasingly available, often introducing new taste experiences to a drink that we all thought we knew. Kent Brewery is under development in the heart of the Kent countryside with a mission to take those experiences to brand new levels!

Kent Brewery is aiming to be up and running before the end of 2010, and I will be using this blog to tell our story as it evolves. At the end of the day, a brewery is just like any other business, and it all begins with all the boring administration. But now we are getting to the exciting part. The brewery plant has been ordered and we have a theoretical build date at the start of November. That sentence makes it all sound so easy, but we are at the end of a long process that has involved questions such as: How big should the plant be? Should it be new or second hand? Where can we source the best or most appropriate kit? In the end, we have plumped for a new construction capable of brewing 12 barrels at once. Barrels should not be confused with casks, which are the smaller barrels that can be seen in the courtyards of many local pubs. Four of those casks equals one barrel, and each cask contains 72 pints of delicious nectar. So each brew will produce a total of 3456 pints if we are lucky. In effect it will probably manage around 3400.

So the plant is taken care of - all we need to do now is to find it a home. More on that to come...
