Well run and friendly inn with interesting décor in old-fashioned, relaxing rooms, fine drinks and smashing food; lovely views and comfortable bedrooms
You can be sure of an enjoyable all-round experience in this civilised, well run inn. The old-fashioned lounge bar has an enormous inglenook fireplace, pictures and photographs on the dark red walls, interesting satirical carvings in the panelling (Victorian copies of medieval pew ends), polished copper and brass, and venerable tables, antique seats and settles on the flagstones. In the bottom bar is a framed illustrated account of local history (some of it gruesome) dating back to the 12th c, and a large framed print of the famous Durham Ox which weighed 171 stone. The Burns Bar has a woodburning stove, exposed brickwork and large french windows that open on to a balcony area. Black Sheep Best, Timothy Taylors Landlord and a changing guest such as York Guzzler on handpump, 14 wines by the glass and ten malt whiskies; background music. There are seats in the courtyard garden and fantastic views over the Vale of York on three sides; on the fourth side is a charming view to the medieval church on the hill - supposedly the very hill up which the Grand Old Duke of York marched his men. Interesting regular events include a Meet the Brewers evening hosted by Timothy Taylors and cookery demonstrations from the head chef. The bedrooms, in the main building or in renovated farm cottages (dogs allowed here), are well equipped, spacious and comfortable; breakfasts are very good. The nearby A19 leads straight to a Park & Ride for York. The pub is part of Provenance Inns.

The imaginative menu celebrates the best of the local produce (particularly game and fish) and they make their own bread and petits fours: lunchtime sandwiches and eggs benedict, ham hock terrine with piccalilli, queen scallops baked with garlic butter and gruyère, sweet-cured bacon steak with fried egg and skinny fries, moroccan vegetable tagine, slow-braised lamb shoulder with herb dumpling and red wine jus, bass fillets with crab and pea risotto and crispy arancini, and puddings such as rhubarb bakewell tart with rhubarb jelly and chocolate fondant with black cherry ice-cream; they still offer some dishes for £7 before 7pm.
