Pub review: The Bel and Dragon, Reading
At the BitterSweet Partnership we aim to improve beer’s reputation with women, and have been visiting pubs throughout the UK to discover how female friendly they really are. Recently, on a visit to Reading in Berkshire I discovered the hidden treasure that is the Bel And Dragon. A perfectly untouched pub that is tucked away on the River Kennet - you have to look hard to find this place.
The Bel And Dragon refers to itself as ‘individually unique’ - so you expect a high standard and something a bit different from the outset. The pub is set in an impressive building with original features, beamed ceilings, flagstone floors and an open fire. It has a chic and quirky layout, which combined with its tranquil outlook on to the river, provides a relaxing surrounding for enjoying a drink with friends.
Particular pride is taken in the quality of the freshly prepared food. The menu offers a fusion of British Mediterranean dishes, including a tossed salad of blue cheese, pear and walnut with watercress and sweet mustard dressing; roast breast of duck with dauphinoise potato, sautéed spinach and plum jam; and Pan fried fillet of salmon with crushed garden peas and hollandaise sauce. There is also an outstanding range of ales and beers that will leave you spoilt for choice.
I couldn’t resist trying the fillet of sea bass with seared king scallops, bok choi and butter sauce. This was paired nicely with a refreshing cold pint of beer. If you are in Berkshire I would certainly recommend visiting the Bel And Dragon- for a cool pint and a three course meal!
